사슴같이 큰 눈망울이 특징인 여배우. 크기만 한 게 아니고, 이영애와 함께 한국 사람에겐 흔치 않은 연한 갈색 눈동자를 갖고 있어 눈매에서 풍기기는 분위기가 매우 독특하다. 그 장점을 살려 콘택트 렌즈 광고 모델을 맡기도 했다.

얼굴 역시 정말 작은데 오죽하면 SM의 한 직원이 '내가 스카웃을 수 년 동안 해왔지만 이렇게 얼굴이 작은 사람은 본 적이 없었다'라고 할 정도로.. 경상남도 진주시 출신. 응답하라 1994 때문에 다들 마산 출신으로 안다.
고아라는 경상남도 진양군(현 진주시)에서 1남 1녀 중 장녀로 태어났다. 어린 시절 진주에서 유년기 10여년을 보냈고, 공군 부사관인 아버지의 근무지를 따라 광주광역시로 이동했다. 송정중학교 재학 당시 가수가 꿈인 친구를 도와주려 백댄서로 SM 엔터테인먼트 오디션에 우연찮게 참가했다가, 제5회 SM 청소년 베스트 선발대회에서 외모짱 1위, 대상을 거머쥐게 되면서, 연습생 생활을 하며 연예계 데뷔를 준비하게 되었다. 또한, 고아라는 춤과 노래, 기타 연주에 능숙하고 영어, 일본어의 외국어 실력도 뛰어나다.
Go Ara was born in Jinju, South Gyeongsang, South Korea. At a young age, she constantly moved around Korea because her father was a soldier. When she was in junior high, she was recommended by a friend to audition for the talent agency SM Entertainment. In 2003, she became the winner of the SM Entertainment Teen Model Contest. After joining SM Entertainment, she began to train with the other trainees under the same company in areas of acting, singing, and dancing.
2003년 10월, 2003년부터 2006년까지 인기리에 방송 된 청소년 드라마 《반올림》의 오디션에서 1000대 1의 경쟁률을 뚫고 주연으로 발탁되어 주목을 끌며 서서히 인지도를 쌓기 시작했고, 또한 데뷔 동시에 여러 편의 광고에 출연하는등 하이틴 스타로써 성장했다. 2006년 드라마 《눈꽃》에서 첫 정극 연기를 선보였고, 백상예술대상 TV부문 여자신인연기상을 수상했다. 이후 '아라'로 이름을 바꾸는등 일본에서의 활동을 병행하며 아시아 시장을 노린 '한류스타' 행보를 이어갔고, 2007년 몽골, 일본 합작 영화 《푸른 늑대 - 땅 끝 바다가 다하는 곳까지》, 2009년 한국, 일본, 중국 합작 영화 《스바루》에 출연했지만, 영화는 다소 혹평을 받으며 흥행에는 참패했다. 2008년에 국내에 복귀해 주연을 맡은 드라마 《누구세요?》, 2009년 《맨땅에 헤딩》와 2012년 영화 《파파》, 《페이스 메이커》 역시 연이어 부진한 성적을 거두며 아쉬운 반응을 얻었고, 고아라가 어떤 연기를 하든 그녀의 출세작이도 한 《반올림》속의 '이옥림 같다'는 평과 연기력 논란 등을 겪으며, 배우로써 침체기를 맞기도 했다.
Go was chosen to be play the female lead, Lee Ok-rim, in the 2003 KBS teen drama Sharp #1, acting alongside Lee Eun-sung, Kim Shi-hoo, and Yoo Ah-in. She reprised her role in the 2005 sequel Sharp #2, this time starring alongside Super Junior members Kim Kibum and Kim Heechul, both her labelmates, as well as Lee Eun-sung.
하지만 3년여만의 브라운관 컴백작이자 2013년에 방영 된 드라마 《응답하라 1994》에 캐스팅 된 고아라는 이 작품으로 자신의 연기 인생을 바꿔놓았다 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 그동안의 부진을 말끔히 씻어내며 대중들로부터 큰 사랑을 받았고, 성인 연기자로 연기변신에 성공하였다. 이후 5개월여만에 출연한 2014년 드라마 《너희들은 포위됐다》에서 호연을 펼치며 차세대 여배우로써 입지를 굳혔다.
Go's breakthrough performance was in the 2006 SBS drama, Snow Flower, where she starred alongside Kim Kibum, Kim Hee-ae, and Lee Jae-ryong. Go's character, Yoo Da-mi, was a rebellious and ambitious daughter, winning her acting recognition in award ceremonies the following year.
미모는 또래 배우 중에서도 손꼽을 만하나, 성인 연기자가 된 이후 얼굴에 비해서는 연기가 부족하지 않느냐는 평가를 받고 있었다. 반올림 이후 이런저런 작품에 출연했지만, 옥림이의 이미지를 지우기 쉽지 않았고, 옥림이의 이미지에서 조금씩 벗어난 연기를 한 작품들은 여지 없이 망해 버렸기 때문. 사실 연기력 자체는 조금씩이나마 나아지고 있었다는 평을 받았지만, 그 놈의 흥행이 문제.

Despite low ratings in Korea, the body swap dramedy drew in international fans, increasing her Korean wave profile. This led to an appearance in the Japanese television drama Karei naru Spy. In 2009, she was cast in MBC's Heading to the Ground opposite idol singer Jung Yunho from DBSK. Director Park Sung-soo later said he had wanted her for the role of Kang Hae-bin more than any other actress.
그러나 응답하라 1994에 출연, 자신의 배역인 성나정을 완벽하게 연기하면서 연기력을 인정 받는 중이다. 배역을 위해 메이크업을 최소화하고 7kg을 증량하면서 시청자들이 그저 예쁘기만 한 스타가 아니라 맡은 배역로서 친근함을 느낄 수 있게 되었다는 평가를 받았다. 꽃보다 누나에서 김희애가 한 말인 "연기를 하려면 그 사람에 빙의되어라"는 말을 자신의 노력에 대중들이 응답한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 다음 작품에서 자신의 연기력을 확실히 보여줄 수 있다면 본인이 그토록 바라 마지 않는 '스타가 아닌 배우'라는 소망을 충분히 이룰 수 있을 것이고 더 이상의 연기력 논란 역시 없을 것으로 보인다.
In 2013, Go's popularity further rose through the nostalgic campus drama Reply 1994. In order to portray Sung Na-jung, she cut her hair, and gained 18 lbs. While many doubted her casting when it was first announced, audiences praised Go's performance by series' end.
문제는 역시 전혀 친근하지 않은 미모와 몸매. 요즘처럼 리얼함을 강조하는 시대의 흐름상 오히려 스타가 아닌 배우가 되고 싶어하는 본인의 희망에 걸림돌이 될 가능성이 있다 참 부럽고도 대단하다 여배우로서 미모와 몸매가 오히려 걸림돌이라니 다른 여배우들이 부들부들 엄정화가 배우로는 수수하게 가수로서는 화려하게 콘셉트를 잡으면서 승승장구한 것을 참고해서 CF는 날씬하고 화려하게 배우로서는 친근감 있게 다가서는 방법도 좋을 듯하다.

Go's first film was the big-budget Japanese movie Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea, which was released in Japan in March 2007, and Hong Kong in April 2007. She played Khulan, the mistress of Genghis Khan, after being picked from more than 40,000 auditions. The film was screened at many film festivals, including the Cannes Film Market, the Moscow International Film Festival, the 2007 Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, and the 5th World Film Festival of Bangkok. Her next film, Dance, Subaru! was a co-production between Japan, China, and Korea, and hit cinemas in 2009.
In 2011, Go made her domestic film debut in Pacemaker, and her co-stars were acclaimed veteran actors Kim Myung-min and Ahn Sung-ki. She then displayed her singing skills in the 2012 multicultural film Papa, with Park Yong-woo. Go received Best New Actress nominations at the Baeksang Arts Awards, the Grand Bell Awards, and the Blue Dragon Film Awards for the two performances.
Since she entered the entertainment scene, Go has been a popular commercial model. Among the products she's endorsed are SK Telecom, Elite Uniforms, and more recently, cosmetics. Go was the youngest model for Etude House in 2006, and filmed the brand commercial with actor Jang Keun-suk in 2008. In 2011, Go and was chosen as the new muse of Lirikos.
